Permit To Carry | Concealed Carry Resources

HOW DO I PURCHASE | BUY A FIREARM, HANDGUN OR PISTOL IN MINNESOTA?

If you want to purchase a handgun in Minnesota you must obtain either a Permit to Carry or a Permit to Purchase. Obtaining a Permit To Purchase in Minnesota is easy, just fill out the application and take it to your local police station. You will also need to bring your drivers licence.

If you purchase a firearm from your local gun shop (FFL) you will still need to fill out a Form 4473 and go though a NICS background check. A permit to purchase is only needed for handguns and firearms classified as Assault Weapons by the state of Minnesota.

Purchasing a firearms from another individual is legal as long as the firearms is legal and you are not prohibited from owning a firearm. Most private party sellers will still require a Permit to Purchase or Permit To Carry.

HOW TO APPLY FOR YOUR PERMIT TO CARRY IN MINNESOTA?

Since 2003 Minnesota has been a "shall issue" Permit to Carry state. This is often times confused with Concealed Carry but there is actually no requirement to conceal your weapon in Minnesota. By taking your Permit to Carry class with TTS, you can apply for your Minnesota, Florida and Wisconsin Permit to Carry.

Minnesota: Upon taking a permit to carry course bring your certificate of completion, application, fee (varies per county but is between $60-$100 for a 5 year permit to carry) and photo ID to your local Sheriff's office. You can either print out the permit to carry application, or fill out the application when you arrive at the sheriff's office. You will then fill out and submit your application with your certificate, filing fee, and government issued identification. Filling out the application is a very quick process and should take no more than 20-30 minutes. Upon submitting your application you will receive your permit to carry by mail within 30 days unless denied.

If I See a business with a "No Guns Allowed" sign, is it illegal to carry inside?

No, there is a very specific list pf places you are prohibited to carry by law, a list can be found in our CCW FAQ.

The law states that a business must do two things if they wish to prohibit carrying in their business.
#1 Inform you that they do not wish firearms to be carried on the premises (they can do this with a sign or verbally)
#2 Ask You to leave the premises

You are only breaking the law if you refuse to leave after asked. If carrying concealed it is unlikely that anyone will notice you have a firearm.

Do the address on my Carry permit and Drivers License need to match?

No, however if you change you address you have 30 days to notify your sheriff. Failure to do so is a petty misdemeanor. We recommend that you pay the $10 fee and change the address on your permit so that it matches your drivers license, otherwise many gun shops will not sell you a gun.
